Gisèle
Unique piece, signed by the artist. 2024
This motorcycle helmet is entirely enveloped in hand-crocheted wool, worked stitch by stitch in Paris by the artist. The textile embraces the helmet like a second skin, creating a striking contrast between the hardness of its original function and the delicacy of the handcrafted gesture.
Previously exhibited at Harley-Davidson Paris Bastille, the work brings contemporary art into dialogue with motorcycle culture.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PIECE
Gisèle is named after the woman who looked after me in the early mornings before school when I was a child. She would keep us busy making things by hand, sewing, drawing and creating little gifts. I still remember those moments with deep affection.
This piece is a tribute to her, and to the quiet influence that early encounters with making can have on a life.
Years later, crochet has become my own artistic language. With Gisèle, I bring that childhood memory into dialogue with an object associated with mechanical power, protection and freedom.
