Sophie Inard is a French artist based in Paris. Her work begins with objects loaded with cultural meaning — from footballs and boxing gloves to guns, luxury bags and motorcycles. Drawn from sport, popular culture and the worlds of power and status, these familiar objects carry their own codes, histories and desires.
Through crochet, she gives them a second skin. Entirely covered by hand, stitch after stitch, the original object remains present but its appearance, texture and perception are transformed. Removed from its usual context and deprived, at times, of its original function, it becomes something else — familiar yet strange.
This process of transformation is at the heart of her practice. Rather than erasing the meaning of the objects she chooses, Sophie Inard works with what they already carry. The crocheted surface creates a distance, a shift, inviting us to look again at symbols and objects we thought we already knew.
Photography and staging are also part of her practice. Her sculptures move beyond the isolated object to encounter bodies, spaces and new contexts, creating images that extend and sometimes disrupt their original meaning.
Her work has been exhibited in France and internationally, notably at the McNay Art Museum (San Antonio, USA) as part of the exhibition Sport & Spectator (2025), and is currently presented at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Kansas City, June–December 2026). She has also collaborated with brands such as Merci and Harley-Davidson Paris.
Sophie Inard est une artiste française basée à Paris. Son travail prend pour point de départ des objets fortement chargés de sens, ballons de football, gants de boxe, armes, sacs de luxe ou motos. Issus du sport, de la culture populaire et des univers du pouvoir et du statut, ces objets familiers portent en eux leurs propres codes, histoires et désirs.
Par le crochet, elle leur donne une seconde peau. Entièrement recouvert à la main, maille après maille, l’objet d’origine reste présent, mais son apparence, sa texture et la perception que nous en avons sont transformées. Déplacé de son contexte habituel et parfois privé de sa fonction première, il devient autre chose — à la fois familier et étrange.
Ce processus de transformation est au cœur de sa pratique. Plutôt que d’effacer la signification des objets qu’elle choisit, Sophie Inard travaille avec ce qu’ils portent déjà. La surface crochetée crée une distance, un déplacement, et nous invite à regarder à nouveau des symboles et des objets que nous pensions déjà connaître.
La photographie et la mise en scène font également partie de sa pratique. Ses sculptures quittent l’objet isolé pour rencontrer des corps, des espaces et de nouveaux contextes, donnant naissance à des images qui prolongent et parfois perturbent leur signification première.
Son travail a été exposé en France et à l'international, notamment au McNay Art Museum (San Antonio, États-Unis) dans le cadre de l'exposition Sport & Spectator (2025), et est présenté actuellement au Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Kansas City, juin–décembre 2026).
